Silent but treatable

Glaucoma: your best defense is early detection

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness, yet it often has no early symptoms. The good news: when we catch it early, we can protect the sight you have.

What to know

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, usually caused by higher-than-normal pressure inside the eye. Because it typically causes no pain or symptoms in its early stages, many people don't realize they have it until vision is already affected.

Three million Americans have glaucoma, but only about half know it. That's why regular eye exams, where we measure your eye pressure and examine your optic nerve, matter so much, especially as you get older.

Who's most at risk

  • Adults over age 60
  • A family history of glaucoma
  • Diabetes or high blood pressure
  • African American or Hispanic heritage
How we treat it

Depending on your needs, glaucoma is managed with medicated eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery, along with regular monitoring to keep your eye pressure in a safe range.
